Paradip Port Authority (PPA) has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing Deendayal Port, Kandla, to become the top-ranking major port in India for cargo throughput. In the fiscal year 2023-24, PPA recorded a remarkable cargo throughput of 145.38 million metric tonnes (MMT), marking a historic achievement in its 56-year operational history. This achievement reflects a growth of 10.02 million metric tonnes (7.4%) compared to the previous year. The port also witnessed substantial growth in coastal shipping traffic, reaching 59.19 million metric tonnes, with a notable increase of 1.30% compared to the previous year. Particularly, thermal coal coastal shipping surged to 43.97 million metric tonnes, a 4.02% increase from the previous year. These figures solidify Paradip Port’s position as a leading hub for coastal shipping in India.
Furthermore, Paradip Port demonstrated remarkable improvement in berth productivity, achieving a productivity level of 33,014 metric tonnes, representing a growth of 6.33% over the previous financial year. This productivity level stands as the highest among all ports in the country. In terms of handling capacity, Paradip Port is on a trajectory to exceed 300 million metric tonnes within the next three years, with the ongoing Western Dock project contributing to this expansion. The project, with a capacity of 25 million metric tonnes, is progressing swiftly under the PPP Operator – M/s. J.P.P.L. Moreover, the project aims to enhance the port’s draught, allowing it to accommodate fully laden cape vessels by 2026.
With an ambitious vision for the future, Paradip Port aims to achieve 100% mechanization of its berths by 2030. Currently, 80% of the berths are mechanized, and plans are underway to mechanize the remaining semi-mechanized berths. Additionally, the port intends to add four new berths in the current financial year, enhancing its operational capabilities. Furthermore, Paradip Port is committed to enhancing connectivity by constructing two road flyovers within its premises, with an investment of Rs. 150 crores. These flyovers will streamline road traffic within the port area, ensuring seamless movement and bolstering the port’s efficiency.
