The Commissionerate police in Bhubaneswar, India have launched a new program called “Enlight 2.0” to support the education of economically disadvantaged girls from rag picker families. The program will initially focus on 200 girls from five different slums in the city. Learning centres will be set up in each slum where volunteer teachers will provide support in maths, science, English, and other subjects for an hour in the morning and two hours in the evening. In addition to educational support, counselling will be provided to parents to ensure their children’s education is continued. The program will expand to support 300 more girls in Bhubaneswar over the next few years. Financial assistance will also be provided to girls who pursue higher education.
