Cuttack's Historic Bali Jatra Begins Today

The historic Bali Jatra, an eight-day maritime trade fair, commenced today in Cuttack, Odisha, on the auspicious occasion of Kartika Purnima. Held at Gadagadia Ghat on the banks of the Mahanadi, the event signifies the 2,000-year-old maritime and cultural connections between ancient Kalinga (modern Odisha) and regions like Bali, Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Burma (Myanmar), and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). This year’s fair boasts a massive open-air market showcasing a diverse array of goods, including traditional handicrafts. Noteworthy attractions include a tunnel aquarium, digital exhibition, art exhibition, eco-friendly fire, multimedia and laser light shows, rural pavilion, handicrafts, urban Self-Help Group (SHG) enclosure within ‘Cuttack in Cuttack,’ water sports, and musical evenings.

The Odisha Rural Development and Marketing Society (ORMAS) have allocated 420 stalls to traders, featuring art, crafts, handlooms, handicrafts, agri-horticulture value-added products, and authentic spices from women producers and artisans across 30 districts of Odisha and 22 other states. Pallishree Mela will host a special gallery showcasing rural Cuttack, while the food pavilion with around 30 stalls will offer delicacies from Odisha, Rajasthan, Punjab, and North-Eastern states. A ‘tunnel aquarium’ promises an exhilarating experience, featuring over 1,000 species of marine and freshwater fish.

A national-level art festival will bring together artists from Odisha, Delhi, Bengaluru, Assam, and Uttar Pradesh, showcasing their creativity through canvas paintings. Folk dances, traditional music performances, and other cultural events will enhance the festive atmosphere at Ganakabi Baishnab Pani Mancha, Akshaya Mohanty Mancha, and Patha-Utsav. With 139 cultural troupes participating from across Odisha and other states, renowned music composers Sachin-Jigar and Anu Mallik are set to perform on December 2 and 3, respectively. A mobile application, ‘AmaBaliyatra,’ has been launched to provide real-time traffic updates in Cuttack and navigate designated parking spaces, ensuring a seamless experience for visitors.
