Bhubaneswar's Nandankanan Zoo Welcomes a Pair of Cassowary Birds

A pair of Cassowary birds has been added to the Nandankanan Zoological Park near Bhubaneswar, bringing good news to visitors. These birds, a male and a female, were obtained through an animal exchange program from the Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad. Before their release into an enclosure, the new arrivals will undergo a 20 to 30-day quarantine period to ensure their health. Cassowaries are flightless birds native to New Guinea and Australia, known as the third tallest and second heaviest living bird. Though the Cassowaries are mostly herbivorous, they turn omnivorous and eat meat at times. The Nandankanan Zoo had Cassowaries from 2000 to 2014, and these new additions mark their return to the zoo.
