Bhubaneswar's KIMS becomes first Odisha hospital to repair heart valve through TMVR procedure

KIMS, Bhubaneswar has established itself as a pioneer in cardiac care within Odisha by successfully performing the state’s first Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR) procedure. This minimally invasive intervention offers hope to patients with damaged heart valves, previously forced to seek treatment outside the state. The recipient of this breakthrough procedure was a 69-year-old man with a complex medical history. Having undergone a valve replacement surgery 17 years prior in New Delhi, he now faced a malfunctioning valve further complicated by uncontrolled diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Despite the high-risk nature of the case, KIMS doctors, led by Dr. Anupam Jena, made the courageous decision to perform the TMVR.

Dr. Jena, Assistant Professor in the Department of Cardiac Science, and his team expertly navigated the procedure, replacing the patient’s faulty valve with precision. This success not only signifies a major advancement in Odisha’s medical capabilities but also holds promising implications for future patients requiring similar treatment. With TMVR now available at KIMS, patients no longer face the burden of traveling outside the state for this crucial procedure. This reduces not only the associated time constraints but also the financial hardship it often entails. The patient in question recovered swiftly after the procedure and was soon discharged from the hospital.
