The annual bird census at Odisha’s Chilika Lake is set to commence on January 4, 2024. The counting of migratory birds will be conducted across five ranges under Chilika wildlife division – Balugaan, Tangi, Chilika, Rambha, and Satapada. A substantial effort involving 21 teams from the Forest department, wildlife officials, guides, and experts from various organizations will be dedicated to this extensive exercise. To ensure an uninterrupted census, restrictions will be imposed on tourist visits, but these will be lifted after the completion of the bird count. The lake is thronged by migratory birds from places including Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, remote parts of Russia, Central and Southeast Asia, Ladakh and Himalayas during winter every year. The winged guests engage in breeding and nesting during their stay with support from favourable ecology around the lake. They start the homeward journey with the onset of summer.
