The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention commenced on January 8, 2025, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, with a grand cultural welcome for delegates from over 50 countries. Odisha’s Deputy Chief Minister, KV Singh Deo, extended a warm reception, emphasizing the state’s commitment to showcasing its rich cultural heritage and hospitality rooted in the philosophy of Atithi Devo Bhava.
Highlighting the event’s importance, Singh Deo said, “It is an honor for Odisha to host this prestigious convention. We hope to make the delegates’ stay memorable and encourage investments in the state.”
The three-day event, themed “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat,” will be formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 9, 2025. The President of Trinidad and Tobago, Christine Carla Kangaloo, will join as the chief guest and deliver a virtual address.
Special arrangements have been made to enhance the experience of attendees. Puri Superintendent of Police Vineet Agrawal stated that key tourist spots, including Puri, have been equipped with robust security measures and hospitality initiatives to ensure a seamless experience for visitors.
South Africa’s High Commissioner to India, Anil Sooklal, also expressed his excitement about the event, recalling fond memories of the 2019 PBD held in Varanasi. He commended the Indian government’s sustained efforts in fostering connections with the diaspora.
