The initiative, titled “Ama Poshak, Ama Parichaya” (Odia Ethnic Wear Day), is being observed as ‘Paridhan Dibasa’ to highlight the state’s rich textile heritage and promote handloom fabrics. The Handlooms, Textiles, and Handicrafts Department has spearheaded this initiative on the third day of the 14-day-long Odia Pakhya festival, which runs from April 1 to April 14, 2025. The aim is to showcase Odisha’s exquisite handloom tradition and encourage greater adoption of locally woven fabrics.
In an official letter to departmental heads, district collectors, and secretaries, Commissioner-cum-Secretary Poonam Guha Tapas Kumar emphasized the importance of embracing Odisha’s indigenous fabrics. The government believes that promoting handloom garments will not only preserve the state’s textile culture but also provide financial support to traditional weavers, boosting the rural economy. To further encourage handloom purchases, the state-run handloom outlets, including Boyanika, Utkalika, Amlan, and Sambalpuri Bastralaya, are offering a special discount of 20% + 10% on handloom products from April 1 to April 14, 2025. This initiative aims to make handloom fabrics more accessible while supporting local artisans.
