Odisha-based filmmakers Amartya Bhattacharyya and Swastik Choudhury have achieved international acclaim with their film “Son of Adam,” winning the prestigious ‘Best Musical Film’ award at the Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente de Madrid (FICIMAD) 2024. The announcement came on Friday at La Filmoteca Española (Cine Doré) in Madrid, Spain. “Son of Adam” is a cinematic adaptation of rock-icon and National Award winner Rupam Islam’s album ‘Aami,’ released in 2020 in collaboration with guitar maestro Amyt Datta. Rupam Islam, the presenter and inspiration behind the film, expressed his personal attachment to the subject matter and the film’s conceptualization, stating that the film effectively visualizes the songs in the album and holds potential for further recognition.
FICIMAD, in its official magazine, praised the film’s ambitious scope, describing Amartya Bhattacharyya’s direction as megalomaniacal, with a potential to encompass all of Indian history and mythology. The film, shot with a low-budget guerrilla style, employs ancestral dances as a conduit between harsh reality and fanciful escapism, offering sequences that are visually and poetically captivating. Swastik Choudhury, who not only co-produced but also played the lead role in the film, expressed his delight at receiving the award, emphasizing the film’s validation of cinematic vision and the power of music embodied by Rupam Islam.
“Son of Adam” was produced under the banner of Swastik Arthouse in collaboration with FilmStop Entertainment. Both written and directed by Amartya Bhattacharyya, the film had its world premiere at the 77th International Film Festival of Salerno in Italy in December of the previous year. It is set to premiere in South America at the San Antonio Independent Film Festival 2024 in Ecuador, where it will be the only Asian film in the Feature Fiction Competition and the sole Indian representation at the festival. Bhattacharyya, known for his critically acclaimed films such as “Adieu Godard,” “Khyanikaa,” and “Runanubandha,” expressed his satisfaction with the acknowledgment of their efforts on a global scale, highlighting the film’s unique endeavor to adapt a musical album into cinema. Overall, “Son of Adam” stands as a testament to the collaborative prowess of Odisha-based filmmakers, whose creative vision and dedication have earned them recognition and accolades on the international stage.
