Jagannath Temple In Odisha’s Puri Receives Record Donations On New Year Day

The Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, has set a new record for donations on New Year’s Day, collecting an impressive Rs 10,94,074. In addition to cash offerings, devotees generously contributed 300 mg of gold and 33.5 grams of silver ornaments to the temple’s Hundi (donation box). This remarkable donation comes amid a surge in devotees, with over 5 lakh pilgrims flocking to the sacred 12th-century shrine in the Pilgrim Town of Puri to seek blessings from Lord Jagannath.

Temple authorities confirmed that the donations received on this New Year’s Day surpassed all previous records. Typically, the temple collects around Rs 4-5 lakh in donations on regular days, with figures rising during festivals and holidays. This unprecedented generosity is a testament to the faith and devotion of the people visiting the temple.

In addition to the New Year’s Day donations, a report shared by Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan in December revealed that the Jagannath Temple has received substantial donations over the past three financial years. From 2021-22 to 2023-24, the temple received a total of Rs 113.02 crore in donations, with Rs 40.61 crore coming from donation boxes, Rs 59.79 crore from bank accounts, and Rs 12.60 crore from other sources. The highest donation was recorded in the 2022-23 financial year, with Rs 50.80 crore, followed by Rs 44.90 crore in 2023-24, and Rs 17.31 crore in 2021-22.

This surge in donations reflects the growing reverence for Lord Jagannath and the temple’s central role in Odisha’s cultural and religious life. As devotees continue to flock to the shrine, the funds generated will help support the temple’s ongoing rituals, maintenance, and charitable initiatives, contributing to the preservation of this iconic religious site for generations to come.
