Odisha’s very own Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General (Meteorology) of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), has been honored with the Outstanding Service Award 2025 by the American Meteorological Society (AMS). This prestigious recognition celebrates his exceptional leadership in enhancing tropical cyclone prediction and warning systems across the Indian Ocean region. The citation highlights his efforts in reducing errors in cyclone forecasts and improving disaster preparedness.
Dr. Mohapatra, a Ph.D. in Physics, has over 30 years of experience in meteorology and weather prediction technology. Often referred to as the “Cyclone Man of India”, he spearheaded significant advancements in tropical cyclone forecasting. Under his leadership: Cyclone track and intensity forecast errors up to 72 hours were reduced by 25% (2018-2022) compared to the previous period (2013-2017). Landfall errors were minimized by 40-70%, enhancing disaster preparedness across 13 countries in the WMO/ESCAP panel. These achievements were part of his contributions to the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) Tropical Cyclone Programme, benefiting countries in the Indian Ocean region.
Dr. Mohapatra represents India as its Permanent Representative to the WMO and has served on numerous WMO committees. Notable positions include: Third Vice-President of WMO (elected in 2023 for a four-year term), Chair of the WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones (2017-2018), Active member of expert teams addressing climate impacts on tropical cyclones and organizing international workshops.
Mission Mausam and Climate Change Challenges.
Recognizing the challenges posed by climate change, Dr. Mohapatra emphasizes the increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. He notes that: Drier regions are experiencing more rainfall, while wet regions are witnessing a decline. Localized extreme events, such as intense rainfall over shorter durations, have become more common.
In response, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) launched Mission Mausam in 2024 to address these evolving challenges. The initiative aligns with IMD’s legacy as it celebrates 150 years of weather forecasting excellence. The Outstanding Service Award is presented to individuals who make significant contributions to the AMS’s Scientific and Technological Activities Commission (STAC) or the broader scientific community. Dr. Mohapatra’s groundbreaking work in improving tropical cyclone prediction systems aligns perfectly with the award’s objectives. AMS also honors scientists through two other awards: the Outstanding Early Career Award and the Distinguished Scientific/Technological Accomplishment Award.
Dr. Mohapatra’s journey from being a Physics lecturer to becoming a global leader in meteorology is a source of pride for Odisha and India. His contributions not only enhance weather forecasting systems but also save countless lives by enabling timely disaster preparedness. This recognition reaffirms India’s growing role in global meteorological advancements and showcases the talent emerging from Odisha.
