Prof. Rabindra Kumar Jena, the head of the clinical haematology department at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, has been honoured with the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), London. This recognition comes as a result of his exceptional contributions to the field of medicine, particularly in haematology. Notably, Prof. Jena is the first haematologist from eastern India to receive this esteemed fellowship.
His academic journey includes completing his MBBS from SCB Medical College in 1983, post-graduation in general medicine from VIMSAR, Burla, in 1988, and a PhD in Clinical Haematology from SCB Medical College in 2001. Prof. Jena holds the distinction of being the first trained bone marrow transplant (BMT) specialist in the state. His expertise extends to advanced training in Thalassemia management from Cyprus and Bone Marrow Transplantation from the University of Minnesota, US, through the VTP program by the American Society of Haematology.
Prof. Jena played a pivotal role in establishing the BMT unit at SCBMCH in 2014, conducting 142 procedures with government support providing free BMT for patients. He has actively contributed to policy development, participating in the National Cancer Guideline 2019, NHM guidelines 2016 for Haemoglobinopathy, and various committees for health guidelines in Odisha.
In addition to his academic achievements, Prof. Jena has served as the president and secretary of the Indian Society of Haematology and Blood Transfusion, showcasing his commitment to advancing medical knowledge and practice in the field of haematology.
