Union Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan unveiled the ‘SWAYAM Plus’ platform, a significant initiative aimed at enhancing employability and fostering professional development among learners. The launch event held in Delhi marked a milestone in collaboration between the government and industry partners to offer courses designed to meet industry demands. Developed in partnership with leading industry players such as L&T, Microsoft, and CISCO, the ‘SWAYAM Plus’ platform is set to offer employability and professional development-focused programs. Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) will oversee the operations of the platform, leveraging its expertise as one of the founding institutions of Swayam-NPTEL, a popular Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform.
The establishment of ‘SWAYAM Plus’ aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry by combining the academic rigor of SWAYAM with the real-world expertise provided by industry partners. The platform will offer courses in various sectors including Manufacturing, Energy, Computer Science and Engineering/IT/ITES, Management Studies, Healthcare, Hospitality, and Tourism, among others. During the launch, Minister Pradhan emphasized the importance of the National Education Policy (NEP) and highlighted the involvement of reputed industrial houses in establishing their own academies, in collaboration with UGC and esteemed educational institutions like IIT Madras. All courses offered on the platform will be accredited, ensuring their credibility and relevance in the professional domain.
Pradhan elaborated on the objectives of ‘SWAYAM Plus’, emphasizing its focus on providing practical, hands-on learning experiences geared towards employability and entrepreneurship. The platform aims to equip learners with the necessary skills and knowledge required to succeed in today’s dynamic professional landscape. Furthermore, Minister Pradhan highlighted the inclusivity of higher education, emphasizing that it is no longer limited to traditional students but is accessible to the working population as well. He emphasized NEP 2020’s provision for multiple entry and exit points, enabling individuals to pursue education at their own pace. ‘SWAYAM Plus’ embodies this concept, empowering working professionals to balance work and studies through a diverse range of online courses, thereby enhancing their career prospects and contributing to India’s knowledge economy.
