Sri Mohan Charan Majhi, a distinguished four-time tribal MLA from Keonjhar district, was ceremoniously sworn in as the Chief Minister of Odisha at Janata Maidan today. This marks the establishment of the first BJP government in Odisha. Governor Raghubar Das administered the oath of office to Majhi, who at 52, has become the third tribal Chief Minister in the state’s history, following Congress leaders Hemananda Biswal and Giridhar Gamang.
Majhi, who hails from the Santhal community, is renowned for his non-controversial and vocal nature. His political journey began as a sarpanch from 1997 to 2000. His rise through the ranks has been marked by his dedication to public service and his community. In addition to Majhi’s swearing-in, the Governor also administered the oath to his deputies, KV Singhdeo and Pravati Parida. This is the first time in 25 years that Odisha will have two deputy Chief Ministers. The inclusion of two deputies signifies a strategic move to bolster governance in the state.
The new council of ministers also includes eight cabinet ministers: Suresh Pujari, Rabinarayan Naik, Nityanand Gond, Krushna Chandra Patra, Prithviraj Harichandan, Mukesh Mahaling, Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, and Krushna Chandra Mohapatra. Additionally, five MLAs were sworn in as ministers of state with independent charge: Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia, Suryabanshi Suraj, Pradeep Balasamanta, Gokula Nanda Mallick, and Sampad Kumar Swain. This brings the total strength of the council of ministers, including the Chief Minister, to 16, adhering to the Sarkaria Commission’s guideline that limits the size of the council to 15% of the Assembly’s strength.
The swearing-in ceremony was graced by several prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, J P Nadda, Jual Oram, and Dharmendra Pradhan. Chief Ministers Bhajan Lal Sharma of Rajasthan, Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh, and Vishnu Deo Sai of Chhattisgarh were also in attendance, underscoring the significance of this political milestone. Congratulations to the new Chief Minister of Odisha, Sri Mohan Charan Majhi!
