Odisha’s inbound tourism sector has seen a remarkable resurgence, with foreign tourist visits (FTV) in 2023 surging by 104.2% compared to 2022. According to a statement presented in the Lok Sabha, the state welcomed 45,173 foreign visitors in 2023, a significant increase from the 22,121 recorded in 2022. This growth rate was determined by applying the all-India growth rate for 2023/2022 to the 2022 data.
In 2021, the tourism sector in Odisha was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in only 2,269 foreign visitors. However, 2022 marked a strong recovery for the state, with an 875% increase in foreign tourist arrivals and a 110% rise in domestic tourist visits. The footfall of domestic tourists grew to 7,867,909 in 2022, up from 3,742,221 in 2021.
While presenting the Budget for 2024-2025, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted Odisha’s attractions, including its scenic beauty, temples, craftsmanship, and wildlife. She emphasized that the government aims to leverage these assets to attract even more visitors to the state. This impressive rebound reflects Odisha’s potential as a major tourist destination, offering rich cultural heritage and natural beauty to both domestic and international travelers.
