IM Padmini Rout of PSPB has emerged as the champion of the 49th National Women Chess Championship 2023, securing her fifth national title. She clinched the victory convincingly by defeating defending champion IM Divya Deshmukh from Maharashtra. Despite a setback against WIM Mounika Akshaya Bommini from Andhra Pradesh, Padmini made a remarkable comeback, scoring 6/7 in the subsequent games. Her championship was further aided by WIM Isha Sharma’s resilience, as she held WGM Mary Ann Gomes to a draw, denying Mary the first-place spot. Mary settled for the runner-up position with a score of 8.5/11. WIM Arpita Mukherjee from West Bengal secured third place by defeating former champion IM Bhakti Kulkarni from Goa, also scoring 8.5/11.
