The renowned Nandankanan Zoological Park, located on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, has received a financial assistance of ₹1.67 crore from Geetarani Mohanty Iron Ore Mines. This substantial contribution will be used for the collection and maintenance of new animals at the zoo, ensuring their proper care and well-being.
In a formal ceremony held on Tuesday, a ceremonial cheque was handed over to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi by the managing partner of Geetarani Mohanty Iron Ore Mines, Srinivas Sahu. The amount has already been credited to the Animal Adoption Account of Nandankanan Zoological Park, reinforcing the zoo’s continuous efforts toward wildlife conservation.
Nandankanan Zoo is one of India’s largest zoological parks and holds the unique distinction of being situated inside a forest, providing a natural habitat for its diverse range of species. The zoo is home to approximately 3,004 animals, including 1,175 mammals, 1,546 birds, 262 reptiles, and 21 amphibians. It houses a total of 156 species of animals, out of which 103 are indigenous, while 53 belong to exotic species. This makes it a crucial center for biodiversity conservation in India.
Actively participating in national and international animal exchange programs, Nandankanan Zoo collaborates with various zoological parks and wildlife sanctuaries to introduce new species and enrich biodiversity. The park has also been consistently encouraging private organizations and individuals to support its Animal Adoption Program, which plays a key role in the proper care and upkeep of its animals.
