Odisha wins Best Tableau Award at 75th Republic Day parade

The tableau from Odisha, showcasing women empowerment, the heritage crafts village of Raghurajpur and the exquisite Pattachitra art, has won the first prize in Judges Choice category at this year’s Republic Day parade.

The tableau from Odisha rolled down the Kartavya Path accompanied by Sambalpuri dancers during the 75th Republic Day parade after a gap of three years. Measuring 45 feet in length, 14 feet in width, and 16 feet in height, the Odisha tableau presented two significant components. The first highlighted a replica of a Kandarpa Hati, a popular Pattachitra design depicting Krishna Leela, creatively formed by nine entangled women to shape an elephant. The second component showcased the women artisans of Raghurajpur village in Puri, acknowledging their contribution to the global positioning of the heritage crafts village. It also emphasized their adaptation to technology and entrepreneurial skills in selling handicrafts online.

The central theme of the tableau accentuated the grit, determination, skill, and talent of the women artists of Raghurajpur. The divine elephant Kandarpa Hathi symbolized these qualities, while the “War Horse of Konark Temple” represented Odisha’s rapid progress in shaping a developed India. The rear portion of the tableau featured a heritage hut from the village, underscoring the pivotal role women play in crafting Pattachitra and masks. A significant element was a big umbrella, symbolizing the whole-hearted support of the central and state governments to the artisans under the “Viksit Bharat” program.

Designed by eminent artists Gajendra Sahoo and Kirti Kishore Maharana, the Odisha tableau stood out for its artistic representation of women empowerment, heritage crafts, and technological adaptation.
