FIRST UPRISING & THE PAIKA BIDROH
In 1803, the Khordha region came under the British rule and soon after, Jayee Rajguru galvanised an army of Paika warriors and waged a revolt against the British in 1804. This was the first uprising against the British rule in Odisha. The revolt by Paikas continued and in 1817 was manifested as the Paika Bidroh of 1817 under the leadership of Buxi Jagabandhu. The Paikas were supported by the rajas of Kanika, Kujang, Nayagarh and Ghumusar besides various zamindars, village heads and ordinary peasants. The rebellion quickly spread to Puri, Pipli, Cuttack and other parts of the province.
REVOLTS ACROSS ODISHA
Trails of Odia Valour spread from one region to another through many localised uprisings. The revolts were strongly felt in Parlakhemundi, Ghumsar, Banpur, Khurda, Nayagarh, Daspallah, Kondhmal, Angul, Koraput, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Sundergarh, Kalahandi, Jharsuguda and Balasore.
WOMEN POWER
We salute the spirit of Odia women who spearheaded the freedom struggle in Odisha. The undaunted spirit to fight, the untold sufferings and self-sacrifice to liberate Odisha & India from foreign rule had been possible with the leadership of our freedom fighters and progressive women like Kuntala Kumari Sabat, Rama Devi,Malati Chaudhury, Sarala Devi, Jambubati Devi, Parbati Giri, Abartti Laxmi Bai.
PANCHASAKHA
Pandit Gopabandhu Das, Pandit Nilakantha Das, Acharya Harihar Das, Pandit Godhavarish Mishra and Pandit Krupasindhu Mishra were like five pillars on whom rested the foundation of Odisha’s freedom struggle. These selfless young men were together called by the name of Panchasakha.
BAGHA JATIN
Jatindranath Mukherjee or ‘Bagha Jatin’ (1879-1915), was one of the most astute, dynamic and fearless leaders of the pre-Gandhian revolutionary nationalist phase in India. An inspiring legend in the annals of India’s struggle for freedom, Bagha Jatin was martyred at the age of 36 at Balasore after fighting a fierce gun battle with the British.
MAHATMA GANDHI IN ODISHA
Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi made about seven trips to Odisha between 1921 and 1946. He was moved by the abject poverty of the state. Gandhi ji stressed on development of agriculture, cottage industries, khadi and dairy farms.
