Tuhin Kanta Pandey, a 1987-batch IAS officer of the Odisha cadre, has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on an additional charge basis. This latest responsibility comes just two months after he was appointed as Finance Secretary. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his additional assignment, effective immediately and to continue until a permanent appointee is named, according to an order from the Personnel Ministry.
Pandey brings extensive experience to his new role, with an impressive record of service in public sector management. Before his appointment as Finance Secretary, he held the position of Secretary for the Departments of Public Enterprises (DPE) and Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), where he led significant disinvestment programs, including the historic sale of Air India. Additionally, he was instrumental in the public listing of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), one of India’s largest IPOs.
Beyond his central roles, Pandey has a long-standing association with Odisha, where he served as the Collector of Sambalpur district. He also worked with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) Regional Office, adding an international perspective to his experience. In 2009, he joined the Planning Commission as Joint Secretary for a five-year term, and in 2021, he briefly took on the additional role of Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Pandey’s latest appointment as DoPT Secretary reflects the government’s confidence in his leadership and experience, underscoring his continued significance in key government positions.
