Odisha Farmer Grows World’s Most Expensive Mango ‘Miyazaki’ In His Orchard

Rakshyakar Bhoi, a farmer and teacher from Kandulguda village in Odisha’s Kalahandi district, claims to have successfully grown the world’s most expensive variety of mango, ‘Miyazaki,’ in his orchard. With the support of the state horticulture department, Bhoi sourced the seed and cultivated the prized Japanese mango variety, known for its unique taste and food value. The ‘Miyazaki’ mango, highly sought after in the international market, commands a staggering price of Rs 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh per kilogram. Its popularity abroad is attributed to its distinctive flavor and reputed medicinal benefits. Bhoi highlighted the mango’s exceptional nutritional profile, rich in vitamins A and C, antioxidants, dietary fiber, potassium, and magnesium, offering protection against diseases and promoting overall health.

While the news has garnered attention, the Assistant Director of Horticulture in Kalahandi, Tankadhar Kalo, suggested that further research is necessary to fully understand and explore the potential of these mangoes. In addition to being known as ‘Miyazaki,’ the mango variety is also referred to as ‘Red Sun’ and ‘Surja Dim’ (Red egg) in Bengali.
