It is ChhenaPoda Dibasa today, the birthday of the sweet dish, which is celebrated on the birth anniversary of its creator, Sudarshan Sahu. ChhenaPoda Dibasa is being celebrated across Odisha today, with people relishing the delicious cheese dessert.
Sudarshan Sahu was born on April 11, 1931. Along with his father, Bidyadhar Sahu, he came up with the recipe for this great Odia delicacy accidentally. He owned a sweet shop at Dasapalla in Nayagarh, left sugar-infused chhena, or cottage cheese, with cardamom and cashew seasonings in a charcoal oven overnight, and discovered an exquisitely delicious delicacy, which gave the state a distinct identity and flavour, the following morning. He slowly perfected ChhenaPoda, which literally means burnt cheese, with a caramelised crust. By baking it wrapped in sal leaves, he gave the cardamom-scented cottage cheesecake a distinct aroma.
The district administration in Nayagarh has decided to celebrate ‘Bishwa ChhenaPoda Dibasa’ on April 11. Nayagarh Collector Rabindra Nath Sahu has written to all the government offices in the district to celebrate ‘Bishwa ChhenaPoda Diwas’ on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sudarshan Sahu.
In honour of the inventor of the sweetmeat and to popularise it, Odisha began trending #ChhenaPodaDibasa for the first time last year. And the celebration is getting bigger this year.
