The 89th Utkal Divas celebrated in Singapore recently showcased the essence, excellence, and fragrance of Odisha’s rich cultural heritage. Hosted by the Odia Society of Singapore (OSS) with the support of the Indian High Commission, this grand event attracted over 300 Odias and Odisha enthusiasts, who gathered to project, promote, and propagate the state’s vibrant art, culture, and tradition.
The ceremony, held at the Grassroots Club Auditorium, was adorned with the vibrant colors of Odisha, creating a captivating ambiance for the attendees. The program commenced with the soul-stirring recital of ‘Bande Utkal Janani.’ The Guest of Honour, High Commissioner of India to Singapore, H.E. Dr. Shilpak Ambule, inaugurated the event by lighting the ceremonial lamp in front of the Idol of Lord Jagannath. Dr. Ambule was felicitated with Odisha’s traditional Uttariya and flowers by the president of OSS, Subrat Nayak, and secretary, Hemanta Rout. In his address, Dr. Ambule praised Odisha’s cultural heritage and commended the efforts of Singapore’s Odia Society in showcasing the state’s golden facets on foreign soil.
The cultural extravaganza featured captivating performances, including Odissi dance recitals and the staging of a Ramayana play. Renowned singers from Odisha, Pradip Palai and Pragyan Hota, mesmerized the audience with their stellar performances. Additionally, the event included a colorful exhibition showcasing Odisha’s famous handlooms and handicrafts.
The celebration also recognized and rewarded talent, with prizes distributed to the winners of various competitions, including the Badminton Tournament, Chess competition, quiz program, and the Youth Achiever Title. The festivities concluded on a high note with the presentation of Odisha’s iconic Pattachitra paintings and jute bags embroidered with Pipili’s applique works to all participants, adding a touch of traditional Odisha to the event’s proceedings.
