In a significant step towards modernizing agriculture and promoting sustainable farming, the Odisha State Government has launched a pioneering initiative by sending 14 progressive farmers on an eight-day educational tour to Malaysia. The objective is to expose these farmers to advanced and climate-resilient agricultural techniques being practiced globally, with the aim of enhancing productivity and resilience back home.

This visionary programme is being conducted with the support of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and the World Bank, underscoring a strong partnership between the government and international development institutions. Alongside the farmers, 14 agricultural officers from Odisha will also participate in the tour, allowing them to gain deeper insights into contemporary global agricultural practices and policy frameworks.

During their stay in Malaysia, the delegation will visit agricultural research centres, learn about innovative farming methods, and receive specialized training in mushroom cultivation, which is emerging as a promising income-generating activity for small and marginal farmers. The focus will be on climate-resilient agriculture, equipping Odisha’s farmers with adaptive strategies to combat climate change impacts such as erratic rainfall, droughts, and soil degradation.

The initiative has been officially announced by Odisha’s Deputy Chief Minister, K.V. Singh Deo, who emphasized that this international exposure will play a transformative role in empowering the state’s farmers with practical knowledge and skills. Upon their return, the farmers are expected to share their learnings with local communities and farmer groups across the state. This knowledge transfer model is aimed at replicating best practices, boosting farmers’ income, and contributing to Odisha’s agricultural sustainability goals.

This overseas study tour aligns with the Odisha government’s broader vision of doubling farmers’ income, promoting agri-entrepreneurship, and building a climate-resilient farming ecosystem. The initiative is also expected to foster innovation in the state’s agricultural sector by incorporating lessons from Malaysia’s technologically advanced and market-oriented farming systems.

By enabling Odisha’s farmers to witness first-hand the success of global farming models, the state government is setting a benchmark in progressive agricultural policy, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and growth of its farming community.
