Small Town, Big Dreams

Kishore hails from Kotasahi village in Puri, and is one of seven children born to a humble family of farmers. Hailing from a poor background, he always wished to support his family in some way or the other.

His passion for sports was ignited at a young age. Initially, he aspired to join the Indian Army through the sports quota. In childhood he had immense inclination forvolleyball. However, later on, his height didn’t qualify him as a volleyball player, due to which he had to stop pursuing the sport.

Instead of giving up, Kishore redirected his athletic ambition towards javelin throw. He saw this as a new opportunity to excel and make a mark in the world of sports.

As the years passed, his dedication and talent in the sport got widely noticed and earned him a place in Odisha’s Sports Hostel.

Kishore’s journey with the javelin began when Laxman Baral, a former champion, noticed his volleyball skills and gifted him a javelin stick. Recognizing Kishore’s potential, Baral saw an opportunity for the young athlete to excel in a new sport.Laxman Baral’s gesture was the spark that ignited Kishore’s journey in javelin. With the javelin stick in hand, Kishore started exploring the sport that would eventually become his new passion.

Kishore’s formal training began under the expert guidance of coach Nilamadhab Deo., Under Deo’s mentorship, Kishore honed his technique, improving his throw distance and accuracy. Kishore’s hard work and dedication soon started to show results. He began participating in various competitions, earning medals and accolades for his impressive performances.

Success Begins to Knock on His Door

Kishore’s breakthrough came when he joined the CISF in Bhopal in 2018.

During his tenure with CISF, Jagbir Singh, a throwing events coach, identified Kishore Jena’s potential and took him under his wing. This mentorship proved to be pivotal in Kishore’s athletic career. Kishore’s hard work paid off with a victory at the Odisha State Championship in 2021, where he made a mark by throwing over 76 meters. He kept excelling, achieving a 78-meter throw at the inter-state championship in Chennai the following year.

Numerous stellar national and international performances have marked Kishore’s exceptional talent and skills. At the national level, Jena won a bronze medal with a personal best of 78.05m at the National Athletics Championship in Bengaluru in 2022.

In 2023, he clinched a gold medal at the Indian Open Throws Competition in Bellary and a silver with an 82.87-meter throw at the Nationals in Bhubaneswar. He also recorded a remarkable 84.83-meter throw at the Men’s Javelin Throw Competition in the Sri Lanka nationals.

Kishore registered his personal best throw in 2023 of 84.77m in the javelin throw finals and finished 5th in the 2023 World Athletics Championship in Budapest. Alongside several milestones, his debut at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023 earned him immense love and warmth from millions worldwide, and he won a silver medal there.
