Bhubaneswar’s Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) celebrated the inauguration of its air cargo service on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone for the region. On its inaugural day, the air cargo service successfully dispatched 100 kg of cashew nuts, previously exported via Kolkata airport, to Dubai, and Jidal Steel products destined for Sweden. This development holds promise for the local business community, as the introduction of the air cargo service eliminates the need for reliance on other airports like Visakhapatnam, Chennai, and Kolkata. Businesses in the state can now directly export and import their products to destination countries through BPIA, circumventing potential delays and extra charges associated with handling fees. The direct connection also streamlines the resolution of any potential delays, ensuring a more efficient and expedited process.
A diverse range of products, including those from the farm, metals, minerals, handicraft, handloom, horticulture, marine, and pharmaceutical sectors, are anticipated to be exported through Biju Patnaik International Airport. The air cargo service, implemented at a cost of Rs 2 crore, is bolstered by the availability of direct flight services to key international hubs such as Singapore, Dubai, and Bangkok from Bhubaneswar airport. This strategic initiative not only enhances the economic prospects of the region but also positions BPIA as a vital player in facilitating seamless trade and connectivity for businesses in Odisha.
