Researchers from the Central University of Odisha (CUO), Koraput, and the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have discovered a rare freshwater edible fish species in the Kolab River at Ghataguda, Koraput. The new cyprinid fish species, named “Garra Laishrami,” was found by Supriya Surachita, an INSPIRE Fellow from the Department of Science and Technology, during her research on the diversity and distribution of fishes in the freshwater bodies of Koraput in Eastern Ghats. The maximum length of the fish ranges from 76 mm to 95.5 mm, and local people consume it. The species is a member of the proboscis species group, and its discovery confirms the biodiversity richness of the Koraput region and the Kolab River. The research findings have been published in the international taxonomy journal “Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters” published from Germany. The new species was named after Laishram Kosygin of the Zoological Survey of India for his remarkable contributions to understanding the taxonomy of Indian freshwater fishes.
