The Nandankanan Zoological Park near Bhubaneswar has recently expanded its animal family, welcoming 18 new inmates from Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park in Ranchi. This exchange is part of an ongoing effort to enhance the genetic diversity and health of animal populations in both zoos.
The agreement for this animal exchange programme was signed between the authorities of Nandankanan and Ranchi Zoo, and it received approval from the Central Zoo Authority in New Delhi. Under the terms of this agreement, Nandankanan received a variety of animals including a female Royal Bengal Tiger (melanistic), a female Royal Bengal Tiger (normal but carrier of the pseudo-melanism gene), three male and one female striped hyena, five male and five female Indian porcupines, and two male Nilgais.
In return, Nandankanan transferred a Royal Bengal Tiger, four Mouse Deer, four Common Palm Civets, two Indian Foxes, two Grey Pelicans, 20 Night Herons, and 20 Black-Headed Ibises to Birsa Biological Park. This strategic exchange is aimed at introducing new bloodlines for several species, including the Royal Bengal Tiger, Striped Hyena, Indian Porcupine, and Nilgai.
The Nandankanan Zoological Park has been proactive in improving its animal stock through multiple animal exchange programmes. Over the past year, it has executed five such exchanges, the latest being this recent transfer with Ranchi Zoo. Earlier in April, Nandankanan received several new species from the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden in Guwahati, including the Gangetic Softshell Turtle, Great White Pelican, Himalayan Griffin Vulture, and Greater Adjutant Stork.
