Bapi Hansda, a 17-year-old athlete from Odisha’s Balasore district, has won a silver medal in the 400m hurdles at the 5th Youth Asian Athletics Championships in Tashkent. Despite being assigned lane 8 due to finishing third in the heats, Bapi ran a brave race and clocked a personal best of 51.38 seconds. This victory comes after he won gold at the 18th National Youth Championship, making him the world’s top-ranked hurdler in the under-18 category. Bapi is a member of the Odisha Reliance Foundation High-Performance Athletics Centre and will be competing in the Commonwealth Championships in August, followed by the Junior World Championships next year. Martin Owens, the head coach of Odisha Reliance HPC, praised Bapi’s achievement and described it as a fantastic accomplishment given that this was only his fifth attempt in the 400m hurdles.
