The highly anticipated Bali Jatra trade fair in Cuttack, Odisha, is set to begin on November 15, 2024, and will continue for eight days until November 22. The announcement was made by the Cuttack District Collector following the first preparatory meeting for the event. The fair, held on the banks of the Mahanadi River, commemorates the 2,000-year-old maritime and cultural links between ancient Kalinga (now Odisha) and the regions of Bali, Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Burma (Myanmar), and Sri Lanka. This historical connection is honored annually with a large open-air market featuring a wide range of goods, particularly traditional handicrafts. Participants who wish to contribute to the Bali Jatra souvenir have until September 30 to submit their writings.
Every year, Bali Jatra offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity. Last year’s event featured several attractions for visitors, including a tunnel aquarium, digital exhibitions, art showcases, eco-friendly fire and multimedia light shows, a rural pavilion, handicrafts stalls, urban SHG enclosures, water sports, and musical evenings. In addition to craft and trade, the food pavilion remains a major crowd-puller, offering a variety of regional delicacies from Odisha, Rajasthan, Punjab, and North-Eastern states in around 30 stalls.
