Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati Sworn in as Odisha’s 27th Governor

Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati has taken oath as the 27th Governor of Odisha. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Raj Bhawan in Bhubaneswar, where Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh, administered the oath of office. The event witnessed the presence of prominent leaders, including Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Leader of the Opposition Naveen Patnaik, State Ministers, MLAs, MPs, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Director General of Police Y B Khurania, and other dignitaries. Following the ceremony, the Governor was honoured with a formal guard of honour.

After the swearing-in, Hari Babu Kambhampati expressed his gratitude and commitment on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Sworn in as the Governor of Odisha, a land of timeless culture, vibrant history, and unyielding spirit. Committed to serving its incredible people and fostering progress, harmony, and growth. Together, let us strive to build a brighter future.”

Hari Babu Kambhampati, who previously served as the Governor of Mizoram, was appointed as Odisha’s Governor on December 24, 2024, succeeding Raghubar Das, who stepped down from the post. The 71-year-old arrived in Bhubaneswar with his family on Thursday. Upon arrival, he was received warmly by the Chief Minister and senior officials. A guard of honour was presented at Raj Bhawan before he proceeded to Puri for a special darshan at the Shree Jagannath Temple.

At the temple, Kambhampati, accompanied by his family, offered prayers and received sacred items, including the Khandua (traditional handloom), the temple flag, and other symbolic relics associated with the sibling deities of Lord Jagannath.

Born in 1953 in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh, Hari Babu Kambhampati has had an illustrious career in academics and politics. He earned a BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering and a PhD from Andhra University. Before transitioning fully into politics, he spent 24 years as an associate professor at Andhra University’s Engineering College, where he contributed significantly to the academic growth of his students.

Kambhampati’s political journey began in 1972 during the Jai Andhra Movement, where he was actively involved as a university student. His commitment to public causes saw him imprisoned for six months during the Emergency in the mid-1970s.

In 1977, he joined Janata Dal and by 1978 became the vice-president of its youth wing in Andhra Pradesh. Later, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where he held several key roles, including the position of general secretary of BJP’s Andhra Pradesh unit for a decade (1993–2003) and the national secretary of the BJP in 2005.

Kambhampati’s political achievements include being elected as an MLA from Visakhapatnam-1 in 1999 and serving as the BJP president in Andhra Pradesh from 2014 to 2018. During his tenure as a Member of Parliament (2014–2019), he played an active role in parliamentary committees, contributing to policy formulation and governance.

As the Governor of Odisha, Kambhampati has pledged to uphold the state’s rich cultural heritage while fostering progress and development. His appointment brings a blend of academic excellence and extensive political experience, making him well-positioned to contribute to Odisha’s growth and harmony.
