Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has announced the establishment of three Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centres of Excellence (CoEs), focusing on healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable cities. These CoEs will be spearheaded by leading academic institutions in partnership with industry collaborators and startups, driving interdisciplinary research and fostering scalable, innovative solutions The initiative is part of the government’s broader vision to “Make AI in India and Make AI work for India”, ensuring that AI technologies are accessible and beneficial to society. The CoEs aim to democratise AI innovations, transforming healthcare services, bolstering food security, and addressing critical urban challenges.
The establishment of these centres was announced under Para 60 of the Union Budget 2023-24 and comes with a financial outlay of ₹990 crore over five years, from FY 2023-24 to FY 2027-28. The CoEs will not only advance AI research but also stimulate job creation and enhance India’s startup ecosystem by fostering innovation across sectors. An apex industry-heavy committee has been constituted to oversee the implementation of this initiative. This committee will be co-chaired by Sridhar Vembu, founder and CEO of Zoho Corporation, ensuring alignment with industry trends and real-world needs.
Minister Pradhan emphasised that these CoEs will serve as “temples of global public good” and contribute to shaping global public policy. “The talent and zeal Bharat possesses will ensure that these CoEs become a key element in providing solutions to global challenges,” he stated. He also expressed confidence that these centres will boost the startup ecosystem, generate new employment opportunities, and establish India as a leader in AI-driven innovation.
