The eagerly anticipated annual Adivasi Mela-2024 is set to take place in the capital city of Odisha, Bhubaneswar, from January 26 to February 5. After a hiatus of six years, the fair is returning to its original location, the Adivasi Exhibition Ground at Unit-I. Operating from 2.30 pm to 9 pm, the event will feature stalls showcasing traditional Adivasi Haat and Tribal Art and Crafts, organized by 22 Integrated Tribal Development Agencies (ITDAs), 17 Micro Project Areas (MPAs), and various state government line departments.
This cultural-cum-trade fair is a flagship initiative of the SC/ST Development, Minorities, and Backward Classes Welfare Department. It serves as a platform for promoting tribal life, anthropology, and facilitates the sale of agricultural products, minor forest produce, and craft materials. One of the highlights is the creation of life-size Adivasi Gaon (tribal huts) representing the diverse lifestyles and cultures of different tribal communities and Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). This year’s fair will feature huts representing Kutia Kandha, Santhal, Paudi Bhuyan, Hill Khadia and Mankirdia, Juanga Munda, Gadaba, Dongria Kandha, Lanjia Saora, Bonda, and Chuktia Bhunjia.
A rich cultural program is scheduled, with 39 cultural groups presenting tribal dances from January 26 to February 1. Additionally, a Bhajan Sandhya will be organized on January 30, and a drama by the SC/ST Development Department Cultural Association is planned for February 2. Multilingual dramas by different tribal communities are scheduled between February 3 and 5. Self-Help Groups (SHGs) associated with the ITDAs and MPAs will display their products, art, and craft items. Various institutions, including Mission Shakti, ORMAS, Millet Mission, Handloom Textiles and Handicrafts, Planning and Convergence, I&PR, SCSTRTI, Academy of Tribal Languages and Culture (ATLC), Tribal Museum, and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences, will also participate in the fair.
To enhance convenience for attendees, cashless transaction facilities through digital payment options will be available. The event is committed to environmental sustainability, as the use of plastics and polythene is strictly prohibited, with violations subject to punishment. The Adivasi Mela promises to be a vibrant celebration of tribal culture, craftsmanship, and diversity, providing a unique and enriching experience for visitors.
